CabinCount
Intelligent Roadside Vehicle Occupant Counting
Count people inside vehicles, even when occupants cannot be seen through the windows.
Fast, reliable, automated occupancy counting for security, tolling, and border crossings.
Works through obscured and heavily tinted windows
Detects stationary, reclined and sleeping occupants
At a glance
The short version.
CabinCount is a roadside vehicle occupant counting system. It fuses Zadar 4D imaging radar with camera feeds to count the people inside a passing vehicle from outside the cabin, including through obscured or heavily tinted windows.
- Measures
- Number of occupants in each vehicle
- Sensing
- 4D imaging radar fused with camera feeds
- Sees through
- Obscured or highly tinted windows
- Detects
- Occupants who are stationary, reclined or asleep
- Mounting
- Roadside, outside the vehicle cabin
- Used for
- Border crossings and controlled entrances, managed lanes and occupancy tolling, carpool measurement, transportation planning
- Integration
- Configured with integrators and operators for your security, safety or transportation system
How it counts
Accurately count how many occupants are inside.
CabinCount combines Zadar's 4D imaging radar with camera feeds to detect and count vehicle occupants from outside the cabin. We provide occupancy information for security, safety, and transportation applications.
Unlike pure camera-based systems, CabinCount does not require a clear visual view into the cabin. It can count occupants through obscured or highly tinted windows and detect people who are stationary, reclined, or sleeping.

Security and border crossings
- Occupancy checks at border crossings and controlled entrances
- Comparison with declared or authorized passenger counts
- Powers next-generation automated crossing solutions
Tolling and transportation
- Support managed lanes and occupancy-based tolling
- Measure carpool participation and average vehicle occupancy
- Inform transportation planning with people counts as well as traffic counts

Radar vs. camera vs. LiDAR
Why occupant counting needs more than a camera.
Counting people inside a moving vehicle is hard for any optical sensor: tinted glass, reflections, night traffic and passengers lying down. Here is how the sensing technologies compare.
| Condition | Zadar 4D imaging radar | Camera | LiDAR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tinted or obscured windows | Counts occupants through them. | View into the cabin is blocked. | View into the cabin is largely blocked. |
| Sleeping or reclined occupants | Detected. | Often missed when below the window line. | Often missed when out of line of sight. |
| Darkness | Unaffected. Radar sends its own signal and needs no ambient light. | Needs light or infrared illumination. | Unaffected. Uses its own laser. |
| Dust, smoke and fog | Sees through airborne particles. | Degraded or blinded. | Light scatters off particles; degraded. |
| Rain and snow | Minimal effect. | Degraded by droplets on the lens and in the air. | Degraded by returns from droplets and flakes. |
| Glare and direct sun | Unaffected. | Can be blinded. | Can add noise in strong sunlight. |
| Dirt on the sensor | Tolerant. Works behind a radome. | A dirty lens blocks the view. | A dirty window blocks the view. |
| Speed of objects | Measured directly for every point (Doppler). | Estimated across frames. | Usually estimated across frames. |
| Privacy | No identifiable images. | Captures faces and plates. | No identifiable images. |
| Resolution | Lower than LiDAR; Zadar imaging radar narrows the gap with sub-degree angular resolution. | Highest detail in good conditions. | High. |
Radar is not a replacement for every sensor. Many deployments pair it with cameras: radar keeps working when the camera cannot, and the camera adds visual detail when conditions allow.
FAQ
Questions buyers ask.
What is CabinCount?
CabinCount is a roadside vehicle occupant counting system. It fuses Zadar 4D imaging radar with camera feeds to count the people inside a vehicle from outside the cabin, for security, tolling and border crossing applications.
Can CabinCount count passengers through tinted windows?
Yes. Unlike camera-only systems, CabinCount does not need a clear view into the cabin. It counts occupants through obscured or highly tinted windows.
Can CabinCount detect sleeping or reclined passengers?
Yes. CabinCount detects occupants who are stationary, reclined or asleep, which camera-based counting often misses.
Where is CabinCount used?
Occupancy checks at border crossings and controlled entrances, comparison with declared or authorized passenger counts, managed lanes and occupancy-based tolling, carpool and average vehicle occupancy measurement, and transportation planning that needs people counts as well as traffic counts.
Does CabinCount use cameras?
Yes. CabinCount combines 4D imaging radar with camera feeds. The radar provides the occupant count when the camera cannot see inside, and the camera adds visual context.
How is CabinCount deployed?
CabinCount is installed at the roadside and senses from outside the vehicle. Zadar works with integrators and operators to configure the sensing and connect occupancy information to your security, safety or transportation system. Contact our team to discuss a site.
